Hi Everybody,
Last month (October 16, 2017) has been 10 years when I wrote my first post on this website.
10 years back I started my journey.
I wanted to see more of the world, learn from different cultures, speaking different languages, getting to know myself better, and lots more.
When I wrote my first post I wanted being overseas only for one year. After that year go back to university for further studies or start full time working. As you know, this didn’t happen.
10 years back on my 22nd birthday I had a goodbye party at my home.
10 years later I was in Australia. I was thinking about all the people that have came, I remembered very good, friends from football, work, school and family.
In all places I have been after my 22nd I made new friends too. I am very thankful for knowing so much people from all different countries.
I’m not talking much about my experiences. Except when people ask me, and are really interested in it. Lots of people asked me where did you like it the most. My answer is always; ‘‘there isn’t a specific place that I liked the most.’’ I see it from a different point. Each country was special on his way. In some counties I had more fun than in another. But in another country I learned more, was better for my development.
My first post was 10 years back. Actually it all started 12 years a go.
I have been for a short holiday for two weeks in Thailand together with my dad.
This was the first time for me being outside Europe and in a very different environment.
This same year I went for football coaching to America:
Summer of 2005.
Without knowing anybody I needed to make the step to get in touch with others, be responsible for myself. I enjoyed this a lot, was a good two months. When came back in Holland, I still needed to finish my studies.
2006:
The summer after went back to America. Again I had a great summer. Fulltime coaching.
Being outside the whole day, and keep moving.
2007: Ecuador
After two trips to North America and finishing my studies I left to Ecuador. The first two months I studied Spanish and after worked 6 months with street children.
Biggest shock moment was that you see, meet and help people that don’t have a house. Lost family or the family can’t take care of them. They don’t have a roof above their head, and are living day and night in the street. I was happy that I could do something for the kids and adults. We could educate then, feed them, help then to find a job, find a place to live and using sport to have fun, through this way we forget all the trouble for an hour and just play football. I have lived this year in a host family. The people were great for me and felt like new family. I am still in touch with the after 10 years.
2008 America:
From Ecuador I flight straight to America for another summer of coaching Football.
After coming back to Holland I have looked around for studies and jobs. But the last year experience was to good. Got inspired by the work.
I said once; ‘’it would be fun to have lived and worked in all continents from the world.’’
After been in Holland for four months I went to;
2009: Uganda
I thought I have seen tuff things in Ecuador and I will survive here easily. But here I have met new problems. Main problems were Aids & HIV and Malaria. My job was teaching PE and soccer on primary and secondary school. We helped the local teachers, and share knowledge. After teaching I worked in an orphanage to help children that were infected with HIV. As you could read on this website there had been a few sad stories. These sad things I am still carrying with me. Not easy lo let it go.
During my stay have made three small holidays to Tanzania, Rwanda, and Kenya.
2010/11 Brazil:
Work for a project in the favelas from Fortaleza. Teaching sport in the poor communities. Help young adults to become an example for the youth in their town. Leading up sport coaches that can teach the younger children to keep them away from the drugs, alcohol and violence. One of their projects is the surf club. Children can receive free English and surf lessons, keep them away from the street life.
I was learning a new language, visited Uruguay and Argentina. And have been to the Carnival in Rio de Janeiro.
2011 Guatemala
The other half year from 2011 I stayed in Guatemala. This has been split in three blocks from two months. First block and the third block were in a small town.
The most memories were the second block. Here I worked in the Jungle. Guatemala just comes out of a war not a long time ago. This has separated this society. In the place I lived was the same life style as in Africa. No electricity and water. This sounds difficult, but it isn’t. Get used about it quickly. Its good have a life for a few weeks without Internet, TV and other luxury. For water need be creative with the rain and the well.
Here I worked as soccer coach and PE teacher. Show the community that sport is more than only playing. Sport is part if your education.
2012 India:
Time to go to the other side of the world. Through some connections from the last years I came in touch with a school in India. I have worked here for three months as PE teacher, soccer coach and swimming instructor. During this time no any difficulties comparing with my other trips. To find a challenge I moved to slum soccer. Here I can make a difference for kids in need. We started up morning and after school soccer classes for the kids. Also spend time at their project in other cities. As were in other counties found difficult problems. They were here too. One if the biggest problems are sexual abuse. The project is helping girls and boys to stay away from this.
Same what we have done in Brazil, this project also educate young adults to become an example for their own community by teaching sport. I was happy to be part of this.
2012 USA
Made for the fourth time a trip to the USA. I like to go here in the summers. Can leave difficult times behind me. Here I can work with other professional football coaches. Put the focus on the player’s development on a tactical and technical way.
Yes, the switch from one environment to the other is difficult. From a place were kids not having much, to a place were kids have what the want. What I exactly notice is when we doing sport all the kids are the same. See them all with a smile on their face.
2012 China
In USA I have picked up my football coaching again. I enjoyed this a lot. Have the opportunity to move to China to work in a full time football academy. This was a step away from the social projects from last years. But a great step forward for a career and living from coaching. Here I lived I a big city near Hong Kong. Think you will here more from in the future. The name is Shenzhen. From all places have been, here I stay the longest, almost two years. In my second year I took the role as technical director.
There was one continent missing on my list. So there was only one more place to go!
2015 Australia:
Coaching is the way to connect. After China I knew I want to continue in football. Through online searching I found an academy to work for in Australia. After a great two years, I made a step up to coach on Australia’s highest junior level. Still doing what I have done the last years, coaching, teaching, inspiring children, and being outside for the most off the day.

2017 Still in Australia
Sport Develops You has extend their programs in Australia to create an income for the foundation. From all the SDY activities in Australia 5% are going to the foundation.
What I said once has come out. ‘’Worked and lived in all Continents in the world’’.
South America, Central America, North America, Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia.
